Ask a Food Blogger: Questions to Valorie

Now that I’ve been sharing recipes and food news and other tidbits for awhile now, I’ve accumulated a fair amount of questions. When I receive a food question, I generally answer it in a blog. You’d think people would want to know about recipes, how to cook things, how to get something just so. . .and I do get those questions. But I also get a lot of personal questions about our own family and our eating habits. I’ve now accumulated enough to share them in a blog. . .so here are the answers to the questions you’ve been wondering about!

Do you really make all those recipes?

Yes, for the most part, I have cooked everything I post at least once before. If I haven’t tried it yet, I’ll usually mention it. But I generally want to try a recipe out and discover its “pitfalls” before I write about it.

Where do you get all your recipes?

I have a ridiculously large recipe collection. I pick up magazines in the stores. I subscribe to magazines. I buy rare cookbooks. As if that weren’t enough, I also subscribe to online newsletters from places like the Food Network. What can I say? Some people collect stamps. . .I collect recipes.

How on earth do you spend so much time in the kitchen?

Truth be told, I don’t exactly. I do cook a lot but I’m also highly efficient. I chop vegetables up when I buy them so that they’re ready to go. I put stuff together the day before or in the morning when I have a few spare minutes so it’s ready to just stick in the oven. If I can’t do it that way, I involve the family so I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing time with them just so I can cook. Meals are much more enjoyable when we all had a hand in them.

What kind of kitchen do you have?

This question makes me laugh. You would be shocked. I have sadly outdated appliances, no kitchen space, one cupboard over the sink and that’s about it. Oh and my beloved dishwasher which doubles as a counter top. (Before we decided to get a dishwasher, we had a washing machine there and that doubled as the counter top.)

How did you learn how to cook?

Someone got me a cookbook on bread baking as a wedding present. The rest is history!
