Yesterday, I discussed what an Arts Festival consists of at my school. Today, I would like to share this year’s Arts Festival experience with you.
Our festival began yesterday at 9:00 in the gym with a performance from the Nashville Ballet. I was very worried that a ballet would not hold the attention of my kindergartens. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The ballet was amazing. Introducing the students to this type of art was great. They loved it! The performers used ballet to tell the tales of Aesop’s fables. The ballet was full of excitement and humor. The day was off to a grand start!
We then moved to the library for a puppet show and reading of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The students were familiar with this story and loved the play.
By this time, it was time for lunch. Due to rain, we ate our sack lunches in the gym verses outside. During our lunch, a DJ played music. As soon as we were finished eating we headed to the dance floor for a little of the ‘Chicken Dance’ and screaming of ‘Ride, Sally, Ride”. This was also a blast!
All of the state booths created by the classrooms were moved indoors due to rain. We began our tours after lunch. Red beans and rice sampling treated us from Louisiana as well as apple tasting from New York. We headed to Michigan and fished in the Great Lakes. We then traveled to Hawaii for pineapple and hula lessons. In Texas we were greeted by opportunities to lasso a steer (plastic that is). In Alabama we were given peanuts and a sheet with our names written in Braille. Georgia welcomed us with peaches. Other states represented included Florida, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Washington D.C., California, and Nevada.
The day was very exciting. I had fourteen parents attend. I encourage all schools to give students experiences like this that they may never encounter anywhere else.
