Avoiding Halloween Photo Mistakes

left

Whether you are planning to scrapbook the holiday or you want to include a shot of your costumed kiddos in your annual Christmas newsletter, snapping frame worthy Halloween pictures is a must.

However, with all of the chaos that surrounds getting candy-obsessed kids made-up and out the door on Halloween night, you might not be able to focus on the task at hand. Fortunately, there are some simple tips that can help ensure that your Halloween photos don’t look as though they were taken by a headless horseman:

Spice it up: Instead of taking photos from the same boring angle, experiment with some extreme close ups and or go wide for an exaggerated look. If your kids are young, then drop to their level to take larger than life portraits. You could also stand on a rock or stool and shoot down at your costumed clan to change up the perspective and add humor to the picture.

Lighting is key: Halloween is the perfect opportunity to take photos in different lighting situations. If your kids are trick-or-treating at dusk, then you will be dealing with low light. As such, you will need to either use a flash or turn the ISO on your camera way up to compensate for the lack of light. You might also consider using a tripod to avoid snapping blurry shots with long exposures.

Tell a story: If you are looking to capture an exceptional series of Halloween shots, then consider photographing your son or daughter’s transformation from ordinary kid to creepy or cute costumed character. The story you can tell of your child being made into a werewolf or zombie via pictures is priceless. Remember to take close-ups of the make-up or jazz up the photos by snapping reflections in the mirror of your kid bring made into a spooktacular creature.
