Babies and Fireworks

fireworks Will you be celebrating the Fourth of July with a fireworks show? If so, here are some things to keep in mind to ensure that everyone, including the baby, has a wonderful, fun and safe celebration.
First let’s mention that very young babies shouldn’t be taken to a fireworks show. The loud noises and crowds can make your baby uncomfortable, scare or cranky. While it may be inconvenient, in the long run it might be easier to get a sitter or to watch the fireworks on television or from very far away.

Speaking of far away, pick out a spot that is far from where the fireworks are originating. This will not only cut down on any possible danger, but it will also make it unlikely that you will be subject to any spoke or stray debris.

While some babies absolutely love fireworks (such as my youngest son), others can be terrified (such as my daughter). It is always good to have an escape plan, if your baby is overwhelmed or frightened. Make sure that you are in a spot where you can easily escape from the noise if needed.

One thing that I recommend when introducing your baby to fireworks for the first time is to view them from your car. This way, your baby may be less frightened. If all goes well, you can stand outside of the car for a better view.

Just as with a parade, I recommend a baby backpack for great viewing. It puts your baby up high enough to see and still keeps her safe.

For safety reasons, never attend a “home grown” fireworks show. Make sure that any show that you go to see is being put on my professionals. The last thing you want is to have a stray rocket come your way or something catch on fire. Most professional shows take place over water or in an open field for a good reason.
