Babies in the News: Baby Taken at Knifepoint

It’s enough to make a person ill, but a month old boy was kidnapped at knifepoint on December 1st. Smugglers who were seeking payment for having helped bring the boy’s parents to the United States illegally took him. The boy’s name is Bryan Dos Santos Gomes.

His parents came to the United States from Brazil, but were unable to pay the smugglers who brought them the fees they demanded. The boy was taken when he and his mother were out with friends. They were approached by a woman in a black sports utility vehicle and taken for a ride. The friends were forced from the vehicle, but the woman escaped with the baby still in her custody.

Initial reports indicated that a bereaved woman took the baby, but now police are looking for a group of individuals and there has been a $21,000 reward posted by local churches seeking the safe return of the baby.

Kidnapping and Capital Gain

I feel for the woman and her family and I feel for the poor baby. He was taken to force his parents to pay a fee they could not afford before. While coming to this country illegally is hardly laudable, but to have your child stolen away by the smugglers who brought you in seeking payment is not a punishment I would wish on anyone.

Unfortunately, when people are willing to break laws – such as smugglers being willing to break them to bring illegal immigrants across the borders – then you have to know they are willing to break more laws to get what they want. Kidnapping, as profound and evil as it is, is hardly a step down for smugglers who break the laws of the nation and endanger the people by bringing anyone across the border that can meet their fees.

Think of baby Bryan today in your prayers and remember his parents, who are longing for his return and his safety.
