Basic Tools for Every Home

You may not be big on making home repairs or engaging in do it yourself projects, or maybe you are just beginning to take an interest in such things. In either event, you may not have a tool box filled with tools. You don’t have to buy an expensive box, or fill it with every top of the line tool available, but you can pick up a simple box and add some of the most commonly used tools.

There are some basic tools that every homeowner should keep handy. A good claw hammer is one. The claw can pull nails and you know you’ll use the hammer often. It also makes sense to pick up a light hammer for smaller jobs, such as pounding a nail to hang a picture. Another item is a hard rubber mallet that can be used in place of a hammer for more delicate items.

You should also keep a good selection of different sized screwdrivers handy, both flat head and Phillips. A great option is ratcheting screwdriver with different bits. Some store the bits right in the handle so you’ll always have the right bit handy. You can also buy extra bits and store them in your toolbox.

A hacksaw comes in handy for lots of things too. If a storm knocks down a small branch, you can easily cut it up with a hacksaw to dispose of it, or if a branch snaps, you can cut it the rest of the way.

A good pair of pliers has numerous uses. Look for a pair with coated handles for added comfort. You can also pick up tool kits that don’t cost a lot but include all the basics. Many are available in custom cases for easy storage and portability. Tool kits also make great gifts for new homeowners or your favorite beginning do-it-yourselfer.
