Bathroom Vanities: Update or Renovate?

Bathrooms are one of those areas that provide you with the most return on your investment when you update or renovate them. So, it does pay to spend some money in the bathrooms. But, sometimes you can spend too much or too little. It is important to know when a bathroom makeover calls for just an update or a complete renovation.

When we moved into our home, the largest bathroom at the end of the hall needed some serious changes. Well, it still does, although we have gotten some work done. The next piece on our list has to do with the bathroom vanity and sink. It is old outdated and made of a cheap laminate material. The sink itself is obvious disrepair and will need to be replaced. That got me thinking about vanities and renovation. Many people renovate their bathroom vanities automatically, when updating might be a better choice. It all depends on a few different factors, as far as when it pays to update, or when it pays to renovate, a bathroom vanity.

You should definitely renovate when:

Your vanity is made of cheap materials or poorly constructed.

Your vanity is in a great state of disrepair. Cabinets that fall apart or have water damage may not be worth saving.

You want to change the floor plan. Starting from scratch is the easiest and most productive thing to do if you are changing your bathroom layout.

You should definitely update when:

Your flooring is in good shape. There is a good possibility that your flooring does not extend underneath the vanity. If your new vanity has a different shape or size, you may be in trouble. Updating your existing vanity may be the best choice here.

Your vanity is in good shape with a neutral look. A neutral base is timeless and can be changed up by switching out accessories, and/or painting.
