Becoming the Mom You Never Thought You’d Be

Attention Girl Scout cookie lovers: FYI–The Girl Scouts have issued a statement saying that their cookies are not affected by the current peanut butter warning.

I just got the “breaking news” from my Girl Scout mommy pal Brenda.

Here’s the irony: Unlike in years past when we would be reporting this type of news at the local TV station we worked at together, we now get it from our kids. Or at least she does.

Yes, my once ultra-career oriented pal is now a stay-at-home mom to a Girl Scout Brownie. What’s more, she’s driving the minivan she swore she would never step foot in, hawking the Thin Mints, Caramel Delights and Peanut Butter Patties she refused to buy from former colleagues, and passing on the pedicures she vowed she would never give up.

Fancy that.

Basically, she has become the mother she never thought she’d be… or at least the mother she publicly pledged she would never be.

To see Brenda schlepping Girl Scout cookies around town is breaking news in my book.

Then again, I image all of us have been acquainted with a Brenda-type at some point in our lives. In fact, some of us may see her in the mirror each morning. She’s the woman who had her feet firmly planted on the corporate ladder, who waited until her mid-30s to procreate, then spent the next couple years trying to juggle parenthood and a fast-paced, take-no-prisoners job, only to discover that Supermom is a fantasy and the laundry list of things she swore she would never do out of fear of becoming “that mom” are the very ones she now performs on a daily basis.

This is how the other half rolls Brenda!

On a side note I did learn some other interesting facts about the newest batch of Girl Scout cookies. While they have not been affected by tainted peanut butter, they are experiencing a setback of sorts this year. According to Girl Scout bigwigs, due to the current economic crisis some of your favorite flavors of cookies have been downsized. The boxes of Thin Mints, Do-si-dos and Tagalongs now contain fewer cookies and the Lemon Chalet Crème cookies are smaller.

Girl Scout execs deny that the changes are drastic, noting that the shrinking boxes are a result of the rising costs of ingredients. The organization decided to reduce the number of cookies in each box rather than use cheaper ingredients or raise prices.

Any other Girl Scout moms out there?
