Bible Stories to Share With Your Children: Enoch

If you have ever read straight through the book of Genesis you have noticed there are several genealogies given in the text. Although these genealogies have an importance in scripture, sometimes they are difficult to read through because you are simply reading a list of generations of people with names you may or may not be able to pronounce. However occasionally when reading through these genealogies a small story may be given about one of the people listed. That is the case with the man who is the focus of this blog: Enoch.

In Genesis 5:18-24 the Bible tells of a man named Enoch. The Bible states that he was from the line of Seth and more specifically the son of Jared. He was also the father of Methuselah who is the oldest man in the Bible for those men whose ages are listed. However more important than Enoch’s father or Enoch’s son is what the Bible states about Enoch in verse twenty-four: “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”

What does the Bible mean when it states that Enoch walked with God? Enoch walked with God by being faithful and obedient to Him. First John 5:2 states: “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.” It is important for children to realize not only the necessity of love, but also the necessity of obedience. Christians show their love toward God through their obedience of His Word.

Share Enoch’s life with your children. Teach your children that God rewards those who follow Him and are faithful to His Word. As Hebrews 11:5-6 states: “By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
