Blogging to Learn

Blogging is not just for the homeschooling moms. Moms everywhere have discovered the fun and therapeutic advantages of blogging. It is a way to connect and share in a method that is visual and able to be accessed at any time. Busy moms enjoy logging online to find the advice they need on their own time schedule. However, the blogging world is not just for moms, writers, and those with a desire to chronicle their knowledge and life with others. Blogging is also becoming a popular outlet and teaching tool for students.

You will find a surge of homeschooled students blogging about their life. Many are using this outlet for fellowship and fun. This is one way homeschooled students from around the country can connect. As homeschooling moms become more connected online they encourage the children to interact as well. This can provide just as much support for the children as it has provided for the moms. Students can also learn from one another, provide tutoring, or become internet pals.

Another reason many moms have encouraged blogging is for educational purposes. Blogging is a form of communication. Many students struggle with communicating through the written word. However, blogging provides a causal outlet for the student to write about his or her own interests. This opens the door to the world of writing. If the student wants to become a good blogger he or she will have to write creative posts with quality content. While the student hones writing skills to accomplish this task you will notice an improved writing style and ability in all areas. In addition, your child will learn some HTML and computer basics. Your child may even obtain opportunities to review books or curriculum. However, it is important that you maintain the final word and control on any projects or opportunities your child may encounter.

My own daughter and her friend have started their own blog, Savvy Scholars. They each have an interest in reading and writing so their blog is focused on books and book reviews. They just started this endeavor and my daughter had learned quite a bit. However, I need to teach her how to create a blog post and correct her grammar. Before her blog, my daughter was not as interested in grammar. I suppose once you realize your words will be seen and can have impact you change your tune.

TIPS:

You can set your child’s blog to ONLY be viewed by those with a password. So if you are concerned about your child having an online presence this is a great step to take.

Let your child know that it is okay to use a fake name online. In fact, you may want encourage it.

Always retain your child’s username and password for your own records.

Check your child’s blog often.

Control the comments settings to not accept comments outside of your child’s followers.

Do not allow your child to give out personal information.
