Budget Recipes – Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Sandwiches

BLT There is something uniquely satisfying about a great sandwich. Typically, sandwiches are made for lunch, but they can also be a quick and tasty dinner. It is pretty easy to stay within your budget by serving a meal of sandwiches, and you can choose to add fresh veggies to them. One of my favorite sandwiches is a BLT.

Bacon isn’t just for breakfast anymore! It also makes an excellent addition to a salad or a sandwich. Bacon is a food that even the pickiest of eaters will decide to eat. You can’t go wrong with bacon.

This week, Albertson’s has Oscar Mayer Bacon (12 to 16 ounce packages), on sale for $6.49. Sara Lee Bread is 2 for $5.00. Large Hot House tomatoes are $2.49 a pound. Ready Pac Salad Blends are 2 packages for $5.00. Kraft Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip are $3.49. Time to make some inexpensive, and tasty, BLT sandwiches for lunch or dinner!

It isn’t difficult to make a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich. They take a little more time to put together than a sandwich that is made from cold lunchmeat. The wonderful smell of the bacon as it is cooking will waft through your home, and entice your family to come sit down together for a meal. CBS has a quick recipe that you can follow if you want to. As always, I would modify it a little bit.

You Will Need:

One package of bacon (You can use turkey bacon if you prefer)

One loaf of sliced bread (of whichever kind your family likes best)

Tomatoes

Lettuce (This week, I would pull the lettuce from the Ready Pac Salad packages)

Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip (to taste)

Optional: lunchmeat slices of turkey

Optional: slices of cheese (of whichever kind happens to be your family’s favorite)

What You Will Need to Do:

Step One: Wash the tomatoes. Cut them into nice, thick, slices

Step Two: Wash the lettuce leaves. Set aside.

Step Three: Cook the bacon on a skillet on the stovetop, (as much as you like). Some families will prefer their bacon to be crispy. Other families like their bacon to be a bit less crispy.

Step Four: Toast slices of the bread. Spread mayonnaise or Miracle Whip on the slices of bread (to taste).

Step Five: Put together the sandwiches. There really isn’t a “wrong” way to do this, as long as all the ingredients end up between the slices of bread. You can add slices of turkey, or cheese, if you would like to add a little something extra to your BLT.
