Building a Homeschool Library: History Videos and DVDs

Previously, we have covered Building a Homeschool Library which discussed supplying classic books for your child to read. My last article addressed building a homeschool educational video and DVD library http://homeschooling.families.com/blog/building-a-homeschool-library-educational-videos-and-dvds for different age ranges.

As discussed in my previous article, children of different age ranges will enjoy different kinds of educational videos. Also important are history videos that are engaging for all ages as you may want to watch them as a family. When looking for historic videos look for movies that are informational, but engaging, and not too scary. Avoid bloody accounts of war for young children. You will also want to review videos for truth of content. Here are some of my suggestions.

American history: The History Channel Presents the Presidents is a great resource for children age 10 through adulthood. The American Presidents DVD Trivia Game is an interactive video that will make you and your child confident in their history fact memorization. Getting Ahead: U.S. History will teach your child everything they need to know about history from the presidents to major events.

Government: The standard Deviants has an entire library of government-based movies.

World History: We recently spoke about the History Channel and its value for homeschoolers. Well, if you cannot get the history channel, you can still view the movies with any “The History Channel Presents” Titles. You will want to collect them all.

These are just a few suggestions to get you started with your visual education library. Keeping resources varied (by having both books and videos) will be sure to keep your child engaged in learning whether they are reading or watching television. Educational movies are also very valuable on sick days and rainy days. So what are you waiting for? Get online and purchase videos and more. You can also grow your video library by visiting second hand shops, and even put on your wish list as gift suggestions are a great way to enhance your homeschoolers learning experience.
