Building a Storm-Safe Shelter

tornado As part of being prepared, should you build a storm safe shelter? Here is some information about shelters and some things that you should know.

Why Build a Storm Shelter

The main reason to build a storm shelter is to protect you and your family from severe weather, such as tornados and hurricanes. Having a safe place that you can get to when you are home can mean the difference between life and death.

If your area is prone to these type of weather phenomena, for example, if you have ever had a tornado touch down near your home, then having a storm shelter would be recommended.

The Different Types of Storm Shelters

There are three different types of storm shelters that you can consider building to keep your family safe.

An underground storm shelter will probably offer you the most protection. It is the least exposed to projectile damage. Built properly, it is the safest place you can be in a storm. Underground storm shelters do have their drawbacks, though. They can be expensive to build for one thing, but the bigger concern is being able to get to them in time and get to them safely.

A shelter that is in your home, also known as an in-residence shelter, can be accessed quickly and without going out into the elements. You’ll need to retrofit your home with this kind of shelter, and the costs can quickly add up, even above the underground storm shelter. An in-residence shelter should be built at ground level not above.

Finally, a prefabricated shelter is another option. This type of shelter comes ready made, and can be attached to the side of the house or placed outside the house on their own foundation. Expense can vary depending on the shelter that you choose.
