Cancun Vacation – Xel-ha A Snorkeler’s Heaven

Xel-ha nicknamed “Snorkel Heaven” definitely deserves the title. It was my first time to snorkel and I was a little nervous but he combination of fresh and salt water in the calm waters of Xel-ha was prefect. We swam for hours watching the plentiful schools of colorful fish, both large and small, and even saw a few manta rays swimming along the bottom.

Activities
The park is open from 9am to 6pm and there is plenty to keep you busy the entire time.

  • You can explore lush jungle paths on bicycle or foot.
  • Refresh yourself in the crystal clear waters of a fresh water cenote (a freshwater sinkhole).
  • Bask in the sun on a lawn chair or swing lazily in a hammock.
  • Take a ride on an inner tube or swim down the cool river, which flows through a mangrove forest.
  • The more adventurous can swing on a rope swing, cross a rope bridge, or jump off the twenty-foot cliff into the turquoise water below.
  • Of course there is snorkeling in the large lagoon with its multitude of inlets and coves.
  • Children will enjoy the playground area with a sandbox, swimming area, and equipment.

Cost
The cost for adults is $303 and children $23. You will want to rent snorkel equipment for an additional $9. Renting a locker is a few dollars more. They also have showers and changing rooms.

The best option is to pay the all-inclusive fee, which is $59 for adults and for children $41. Although more expensive it was well worth it. The fee includes your entrance fee, snorkel equipment, locker rental, towel, and all food and drinks. They have a wonderful breakfast buffet which we enjoyed. We also had lunch, ranging from hamburgers to traditional Mexican fare, and snacks such as ice cream and popsicles throughout the day.

The park only allows biodegradable sunscreen, which you can purchase in the park. It costs about $15 per tube.

Additional Adventures
There are a variety of extra adventures that you can enjoy at Xel-ha, at an additional cost ranging from $40 to $110.

Snuba – Is a combination of snorkeling and scuba. An air tank, which floats on the surface, is attached to a hose, which is worn over the divers mouth and nose.

Sea Trek – The participant wears a diving helmet that is attached to a hose, which allows them to walk on the seabed.

Dolphin Swim – Participants get the opportunity to swim with and interact with dolphins.

You can make advance reservations at www.xelha.com, which I suggest since Xel-ha does have a limit and fills up quickly.
