In our home, most all of the television that we watch is something I’ve pulled up from our recorded shows. We rarely watch live television. Because of this, my son hasn’t seen many of the cartoons that are shown on live television.
Up until recently, the only cartoons that my son had been exposed to were the following:
*Tom & Jerry
*Spongebob Squarepants
*Looney Toons
*Dora the Explorer
*Garfield
Most of the time, my son watches recorded episodes of Spongebob Squarepants or his dvd collection of seasons of Spongebob. Since he was so interested in everything Spongebob, I never really paid attention to what other cartoons were being aired.
I never wanted my son to watch “Cartoon Network” on live television. There are too many things shown on that channel that are inappropriate for toddlers, in my opinion. I would want to make sure I was paying very close attention if it were on in my son’s presence.
Yesterday, my son wanted to watch Garfield while I was preparing a snack and doing some household chores. He was sitting with his “Nana” and they put Garfield on. What I didn’t realize was that it was currently being recorded. Therefore, when the show went off, the television went to live shows.
When I returned, my son was watching a new cartoon. I asked what the cartoon was and was told it was “Chowder.” I had never heard of it. I allowed my son to watch it and I observed. Here is what we discovered:
Toddler Review
My son didn’t take his eyes off of the television. He seemed completely impressed by the characters in this cartoon. I asked him if he wanted to stop it and watch Garfield again. He said, referring to Chowder, “I like this.”
Parent Review
After discussing the cartoon with my stepmother, we have agreed on some things about this cartoon. Here are our conclusions:
*The show is annoying to adults. It isn’t easily tuned out like other cartoons.
*There are scenes where the characters are shown making noises of bodily functions which we found repulsive.
*We never found anything valuable shown in the cartoon.
Overall, it was an easy and mutual decision to take Chowder off of my son’s list of approved cartoons.
