Celebrate Your Child’s Care Team

With all there is to do this holiday season, don’t forget about those that make a real difference in your child’s life. We send holiday cards to everyone we know, but often times we overlook people who have made a real difference in our lives – our child’s special care team.

No matter what the condition is that your child has, chances are there is a team of people who help you to take care of him. There are doctors, nurses, nutritionists, child life specialists, home care providers, social workers, and specialists who have offered you support and guidance while providing treatment to your child. They deserve some recognition.

Send them holiday cards. When you are mailing out your Christmas cards this year, include the staff at your doctor’s office, hospital or clinic. You may not know their home addresses, but you can certainly get a few cards delivered to them at their place of work. Sending a card with a thank you note will put a smile on their faces. It’s nice to be appreciated for the work that you do.

Invite them to a get-together. While their schedules may not allow them the time, invite your child’s care team to a holiday get-together. You can even plan it with other families as a way to say thank you for all that they do to help your children.

Bring gifts to them. Get together with other families and bring gifts to the staff that does so much to care for your child. The gifts can be anything from cards, pictures and items handmade by your children, to gift cards for a dinner to a local restaurant. Even the smallest gift will be greatly appreciated.

If your child’s care team has to work on a holiday, bring them some homemade treats. Eating hospital food on Christmas is rough on the doctors too. They would love some goodies to munch on throughout their shift and will appreciate the thought. They work long hours to take care of our children and should be recognized for that.
