Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

left

Hola and Ole; two words you’ll be hearing a lot of in the coming days.

As we count down to Cinco de Mayo, you can look forward to a host of parties and parades where plenty of amazing Mexican food will be shared and consumed. The festivities get underway on the fifth of May and commemorate the Battle of Puebla in which the Mexican army defeated an advanced attack by French troops.

While some focus on the cultural and historic significance of the day, many others simply consider Cinco de Mayo a reason to party. If you are planning a fiesta on Cinco de Mayo these tips may come in handy:

Activities: Mexicans love to dance to great music, so it stands to reason that your Cinco de Mayo party should include lots of amazing tunes. Blast the traditional version of the Mexican Hat Dance or download authentic Mexican songs from iTunes. Another must-have activity is the smashing of the pinata. Fill the colorful paper mache sculptures with candy, small toys or other trinkets and let your guests take a swing at it to see who will break it open first.

Games: If you are planning a kid-friendly Cinco de Mayo fiesta be sure to feature themed games, such as “Pin the Sombrero on the Burro” (instead of Pin the Tail on the Donkey) and “Hot Chili Pepper” (instead of Hot Potato). Another fun option is to fill a jar with Mexican jumping beans and have guests guess how many are squeezed inside.

Menu: One of the easiest ways to feed a crowd of Cinco de Mayo party guests is to create a Taco Bar. Have warm tortillas and some crunchy taco shells at the beginning of the buffet, and then let your guests build their own Mexican culinary delight with chicken, beef or pork topped with lettuce, shredded cheeses, salsa, onions, olives, guacamole, fajitas and sour cream. Don’t forget the sangria and margaritas.
