Celebrities and the Taxman – Part I

The tax deadline is almost upon us and you may be feeling a little blue, especially if you owe the Internal Revenue Service money. But, chances are, things could be worse. The other day, I blogged about soccer star Maradona owing Italian taxes, but there are stars right here in the states that are currently suffering tax woes:

Singer Dionne Warwick has owed the State of California almost $3 million dollars for the past ten years. Oh, Dionne, you can run, but you cannot hide from the taxman! She blames the delinquent taxes on her former business managers.

Comedian Sinbad also owes California big bucks – over $2.1 million owed going back to December 1993.

Race car driver Helio Castroneves is still trying to get his tax debt settled. The IRS says he owes $2.3 million on $5 million he has in an offshore account. His people say that he doesn’t owe taxes because he has not received the money yet.

Al Sharpton owes the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance $886,669.

Rapper Lil’ Kim owes taxes in many states. Detnews.com is reporting that Kim owes $12,599 to the state of New York, $4,089 to the state of California, and $916,982 to the state of New Jersey.

Marcheline Bertrand, better known as the mother of Angelina Jolie, owes the IRS 62,928.70 dollars, even though she died in January 2007. You would think daughter Angelina would get that straightened up to avoid additional interest! The interest and penalties is already up to $18.000.

Then, there is O.J. Simpson. As if a prison sentence isn’t enough, O.J. is also going to owe the California when he gets out. He has owed personal income taxes since 1999. So far, the amount is over $1.4 million. Who knows what it will be when he gets out of the slammer!

Tomorrow, I will talk about the celebrities the taxman has already chewed up and spit out.
