Celebrities Get “Their Halo 3 On”

Halo 3 debuted today for the Xbox 360 after weeks and weeks of promotional hype. This third installment of the popular video game series was created by Microsoft. And although the company won’t say how many millions of dollars went into its development and promotion (probably more like tens of millions), Microsoft says it is confident that it will outdoor the summer blockbuster movie Spiderman 3.

Why the movie comparison? I’m not sure. Shouldn’t apples be compared to apples and video games to video games? Perhaps the comparison is one more way to grab people’s attention in an avalanche of hype that even has fans of the Halo series annoyed.

Among the hype for Halo 3 were celebrity events were the beautiful people implied how cool it is to be obsessed with the game. Huge paid Hollywood stars always make time to sit in front of the video game screen whenever they are visiting the Rivera or Apsen or Paris or wherever it costs $5,000 a night to stay, don’t they?

Halo 3 follows Halo and Halo 2, both great sellers in the video game arena, with sales of 14.8 million copies. The games are the first person shooter type. In Halo 3, the main character is Master Chief. He is a masked human soldier of the future who returns to Earth to aide in the battle for humanity’s survival. You see, alien armies are taking over our planet, while an even bigger threat is posed to wipe out the entire universe.

There are different editions of the game. The regular edition sells for $59.99. A limited edition includes extras, such as an art book and sells for $69.99. The legendary edition includes an official replica helmet like the one worn by Master Chief. And finally, for $399, there is a Halo-themed Xbox 360 itself, complete with custom Halo design, although it doesn’t actually include the Halo game.
