Celebrity Divorces—What Fuels Battles Like These?

It’s no secret I was shocked when I heard the news that model Christie Brinkley was getting divorced yet again. And, like many others, I was even more shocked when I learned what triggered her filing. Tabloid trash aside even the most uninterested reader has got to feel horrible for the children involved in this divorce (and those not nearly as contentious as Brinkley’s), which is why I was stunned when I heard what transpired a few days ago when Brinkley and her estranged husband Peter Cook tried to hammer out a temporary custody agreement involving their 11-year-old son Jack and 8-year-old daughter Sailor.

According to New York newspapers, the main issues of contention during the 5-hour long court appearance was whether the kids should be allowed to fly on a commercial plane during a terrorist red alert. (Am I completely out of it or is this an issue all celebrity parents are concerned about?)

Court records show that Brinkley had requested that the children “be prohibited from flying on a commercial plane” while Cook demanded that they “not be allowed to fly on a commercial or a private jet.” But Brinkley claimed she’d needed to use a private jet last summer to take Jack to camp.

In the end the judge settled the dispute by deciding that the children be permitted to fly on a private jet. But according to PEOPLE magazine, the travel issue was not the only item on the court’s agenda. As a part of the temporary custody agreement, Brinkley requested that Cook help the kids with their homework. When told of the request, Cook remarked, “Does she do it or does the nanny do it?”

Well, it doesn’t take a genius to deduce that there is no love lost between Brinkley and Cook (though I hear adultery has that affect on relationships), yet before the judge ended the session he told the pair that they should avoid a trial over the children “at all costs.”

How many of you think that will happen?
