Celebrity Fashion Trends—Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?

Page through any fashion magazine and you will likely see a bevy of celebrities whering the latest trends in fashion. But, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what constitutes a “trend?” Does a trend start off on the runaways of New York or Paris, or is it more of an accident? For example, if four of Hollywood’s fashionably elite turn up to the same event wearing the same type of dress, does it mean they are following a trend… or do stylish minds simply think alike?

I don’t claim to be a fashion expert (I’m more like an expert in comfort), but I have recognized what I would consider a couple of recent “fashion trends:”

JERSEY DRESSES (Thumbs UP)

Now here’s a trend I will happily follow… and in doing so I join the ranks of the famous Eva Mendes, Beyonce and Halle Berry who have all recently stepped out in cafe au lait colored jersey dresses. I’m not sure brown is my best color, but I love the comfort that jersey knit fabric provides. I know brown is often considered the new black (fashion editors claim the color is “universally flattering”) and I would say on the aforementioned women (who have darker skin tones to begin with) a brown dress helps to accentuate their skin tones beautifully (though I am still not convinced that it does the same for me).

DARK NAIL POLISH (Thumbs DOWN)

Remember when Chanel debuted its coveted Vamp nail polish in 1994? I had just graduated from college and was working at a local television station. While there I did a story on how the rich, velvety shade was not only rock-star sexy, but it also was being used by teenage members of Goth groups to paint their bodies. From that day on I became somewhat disenchanted by dark nail polish (no offense to Goth lovers out there). Well, I just heard that black and its dark sisters (plum, raspberry to burgundy) are baaack! Apparently, stars including Heidi Klum, Mischa Barton and Jessica Simpson have been photographed flashing darkly colored manicured fingertips against their fall wardrobes. No surprise, Chanel’s limited-edition shade Black Satin sold out in record time.
