How bad does a mother/daughter relationship have to be when it seems their main form of communication is Twitter?
That seems to be the current state of the relationship between rocker Courtney Love and her only child, Frances Bean Cobain.
Frances Bean hasn’t had an easy life. Her father, Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, killed himself in 1994, when she was just two-years-old. For some reason, his ashes weren’t scattered until 1999, when a then seven-year-old Frances Bean scattered them into McLane Creek in Washington.
Frances Bean was raised by her mother part of her life, but because of Love’s career and substance abuse, she also spent time living with aunts and grandparents. In 2009, a judge gave Frances Bean’s paternal grandmother and aunt temporary co-guardianship. At one point, there was a restraining order prohibiting Love from contacting Frances Bean.
So to say the two have had a strained relationship is fair. But, as a mother, Love doesn’t seem to be doing herself any favors. Last week, she tweeted, “I hear from Frannie’s roommate that @davegrohl hit on frances.” What makes this especially bad is that Grohl was part of Nirvana with Cobain. Love also tweeted, “I’m not mad at her, him I am about to shoot dead.”
The only problem is it doesn’t appear to be true. Frances Bean, who has rarely spoken to the press, issued a statement saying, “While I’m generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn. I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I’m in a monogamous relationship and very happy. Twitter should ban my mother.”
Grohl also denies the “hit,” telling E! News he found Love’s tweet “upsetting, offensive, and absolutely untrue.” He went on to say “Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant.”
I doubt it will smooth anything over, but Love did apologize, via Twitter of course. She wrote, “Bean, sorry I believed the gossip. Mommy loves you.”
