Changing Your Name

Once your wedding is complete, there is still one more task that needs to be completed before your marriage duties are done. As the new wife in the marriage, it is absolutely your decision as to whether or not you are going to change your name to your new husband’s last name.

This is a decision that most couples discuss prior to the wedding, but if you and your spouse did not, now is the time to make this decision. There are a lot of factors which decide whether or not changing your last name is something that you would like to do. For instance, if you are in a profession where your name has already been branded into the industry of choice, than it may not be a good idea to change your name. This type of change could affect your career in a negative way. By working in a career field where your name is not in the public eye, you are completely safe to change your name without fear of negative repercussions.

In some instances, the culture of the couple makes a difference when it comes to changing the name of the bride. Sometimes it is required that the wife changes her name to her husband’s no matter what type of job she has or how it will affect her life. There are many situations like this when it comes to the name of the bride. Of course women today may find this tradition old fashioned and may not want to give up their name. This is the case for many women today. They do not want to change their name for any reason and refuse to do so. In most cases the man does not care one way or the other. This is a decision that is 100% up to the women herself.

What you do is visit your town hall or civic center where your government activities are located, such as driver’s licenses, birth certificates and that sort of thing. This building will have for you the proper forms that you need to fill out in order for you to change your name officially. You must take the legal steps when it comes to changing your name otherwise you are changing your name illegally and when you sign papers, etc they will be void. These papers are quick to fill out and the transfer is simple. Once you have completed these papers and they have gone through successfully, you are able to sign any legal or professional documents using your new name and have no problems whatsoever.

Changing your name after your marriage can be a littler nerve racking, but it is just a technicality and not something that you are required to do immediately, remember this.
