Cheap “Cheep” Crafts for Kids

Birds don’t chirp or peep in our house, they “cheep.” Just ask my 4-year-old, who recently came home from a friend’s house with birds she made from plastic Easter eggs. Her BFF’s crafty mom helped the girls create the cutest “cheep-cheeps” for cheap.

The instructions for the Plastic Baby Birds follow, as well as a recipe for Chocolate Bird’s Nests:

PLASTIC BABY BIRDS

Materials:

Plastic Easter egg (one half for each bird)

Construction paper (orange and brown)

Paper plate

Brown paint

Paintbrush

Scissors

Glue

Black Sharpie

Directions:

Paint the paper plate brown, making sure you cover the entire plate thoroughly with the paint.

Next, fold a small piece of orange construction paper, and cut out a triangle on the fold. This will be the bird’s beak.

Use the remainder of the construction paper to cut out two wings for each bird.

Make a small fold at the bottom of each wing. This is where you will be placing the glue so the wings adhere to the bird’s body.

Glue the beak and wings onto your bird.

Use the Black Sharpie to draw the bird’s eyes onto the egg.

Put some glue on the bottom of the egg and glue your bird onto the paper plate nest.

Cut some strips from brown construction paper.

Glue the brown strips around the paper plate to make it look like sticks and twigs used in a real bird’s nest.

CHOCOLATE BIRD’S NEST

Ingredients:

12 oz. package of semi-sweet chocolate chips

3 1/2 cups of crunchy chow mein noodles

1 cup of peanuts

1/2 cup coconut

Small jelly beans or other egg shaped candy

Directions:

Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler.

Stir in noodles, peanuts and coconut making sure to evenly coat them with the chocolate.

Drop heaping spoonfuls of the mixture onto wax paper, about 3 to 4 inches in diameter

Use a spoon to hollow out the middle of each nest.

Place nests in refrigerator for a couple of hours to set.

Remove nests from refrigerator and place jelly beans inside.

Eat immediately or save to give as gifts or party favors.
