Choosing Your Wedding Cake

Ah, the wedding cake. Probably the item most scrutinized, with the exception of the wedding dress. Have you chosen what kind of cake you’d like for your wedding? Let’s look at some of the different styles.

cake

This cake is probably one of the most classic. Each tier is set on a small plastic tray, and those trays are then snapped onto columns, which are snapped onto the bottom layer. You can put anything you like between the layers, as shown here with this couple’s use of goblets.

This style of cake is probably the second-most classic. The layers are stacked directly on top of each other, but there is still a plastic tray between each. You couldn’t put three layers of cake right on top of each other without that poor little bottom layer caving in under all that pressure. The plastic trays are set on supports, but they aren’t visible like the columns.

This cake takes the column idea but gives it a new twist. I’m reminded of a wedding magazine when I look at this picture – the cake is classic, but it’s elegant and upscale.

This cake shows us what can happen when the bride and groom want something a little out of the ordinary and the decorator is willing to walk on the wild side. There are certainly classic designs and shapes, but you don’t have to stay limited to those if you don’t like. My wedding cake was a square two-layer with columns, and then the groom’s cake was a Bundt. I really wanted a bleeding armadillo groom’s cake, but for some reason, that didn’t happen.

You can have a cake as unique as you are. Here are the things to consider:

What style is your wedding? You definitely want the cake to fit in with the theme.

What is your own personal style? This should be reflected in the style of the wedding – after all, it’s your day, and should be all about you.

What can your budget afford? Some of the most creative decorators are also some of the most expensive, and you’ll want to ask around and do your research to see if you’re getting the best price for what you want. And make sure they do delivery and set-up. Believe it or not, some places don’t.

As you take these things under consideration, I might also suggest that you either have the cake on a tall table, or you assign someone to be the guardian of the cake. Little fingers get very tempted to reach in and touch that pretty icing, and maybe even take a taste, and if you have some preventative measures in place, you can avoid a handprint on your creation, or, worst case scenario, the whole thing tumbling over as eager children race around it.

Later on, we’ll discuss flavors, cutting the cake, and other fun wedding dessert tips and tricks.
