The Christian Marriage

Over the next few weeks I want to focus some blog articles on marriage, and more specifically the Christian marriage, which should be centered on God. The topic of marriage has been on my mind a lot lately. There have been some really good discussions in the Christian Families Forum specifically about Christianity and marriage. My husband and I have some good friends who are getting married this weekend. I also came across the following quote by Rita Rudner, a comedienne: “In Hollywood a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk.”

The quote by Ms. Rudner really caught my attention. In America it seems that many people have a very carefree approach when it comes to marriage. This attitude is often exhibited in Hollywood marriages for everyone to see through the media; however, it is also an attitude that has crept into the average American home.

God’s plan of marriage is one woman married to one man for life. Unfortunately, man can always seem to find ways to mess up God’s plan. Christians need to have a different approach to marriage than the rest of the world. The relationship between a Christian husband and a Christian wife should be founded on principles laid out in the Bible. When two Christians are joined in marriage they should enter into the marriage with the mindset that it is a lifelong commitment. Marriage is a very serious dedication to not only one’s spouse, but also to God.

In Genesis 2:18-24 the Bible speaks of the first marriage, which was between Adam and Eve.

“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
