We send Christmas cards to friends and family around the country and the world to show them how much we care – but I think sometimes that we take Christmas cards for granted and we pick out the one with the pretty picture and we rush through them signing our names and sticking them in an envelope and we forget how truly personal we can make a Christmas card and that the real meaning of the card is an I Love You and I am thinking of you – and isn’t that the real meaning of Christmas?
Choose Your Cards With Care
Yes, buying the box set of cards is far less expensive than picking out individual cards for every person you’d want to send out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take the time to make the cards individual and write a personal note into each one. Some people include their Christmas letters summing up the previous year and putting family and friends on the same page as to where they are in their lives and that’s cool too, but one of the ways we like to make Christmas personal here is to write down a thought that is individual to the person we are sending the card too.
Picking out the right Christmas card for my husband is always something that takes a lot of time. I don’t necessarily want a sappy card that says a lot of flowery things. Instead, I tend to choose the cards that have a joke in them that means something to the both of us. The card can be a shopping trip in and of itself and on at least three different Christmases it’s taken several trips to several different card stores, grocery stores and the card sections of Target and Walmart and more to find that perfect card.
After I find the one that works, I sit down and write a personal note to him – sometimes it’s short and sweet and sometimes it’s longer. I always try to find a way to thank him for the special things we did that year and sometimes I just thank him for being him. The goal of the card is to convey my feelings and to make him smile and if I can see his lips curve upwards and his eyes lighten up – then I’ve done my job.
