Cleaning and Protecting Kitchen Cabinets

How do kitchen cabinet doors get so dirty? Of course, there is grease in the air from cooking, but it seems like no matter how often you clean, there is build up. How does it build up so fast? Then, dust and debris sticks to the greasy build up making a real mess. Yuck!

One problem is that sometimes we don’t get the cabinet doors and drawer fronts completely clean on the first try. We might only be removing the first layer. Try standing back after cleaning and looking at the doors from an angle. You might find that there is more build up than you realized when you looked at them head on. Turn a light on and look at an angle using the glare to your benefit. Continue wiping and checking until you don’t see any more smears.

Once you are sure the cabinets are clean of heavy build up, wipe once more with a product that contains oils, such as oil soap or an orange oil product. This helps prevent wood from drying due to all that strenuous cleaning.

Next, add a polish that contains wax such as Pledge. It will help protect your cabinets and make the gunk less likely to stick and easier to wipe off. If you do this regularly, you will avoid heavy build up and extensive cleaning. There will also be less damage to your cabinets. They will be clean and beautiful and will last much longer even if you do a lot of cooking.

Don’t forget to use the same routine on drawer fronts and cabinet frames as well to protect them and make them shine. It takes a little more effort and more time initially, but it will save both later on. You’ll have a lot less to say, “Yuck!” about, and your kitchen will have a fresh, clean, citrus scent.
