The change of seasons is a good reminder to clean and reorganize your closets. I always rotate clothes with the seasons, this gives me more room in the closet and allows me to see what I’ve really been wearing.
First you need to pull everything out of your closet, not all at once, one thing at a time. Ask yourself these questions:
1. How often did I wear this? If the answer is less than twice in six months, it should go in a give a way bag.
2. Do I feel good when I wear this? If it makes you feel good, keep it, if it will make you feel good when you lose ten pounds, put it in the give a way bag.
3. Does it need repairs? Are there buttons missing, hems falling? Do not add it to a mountain of clothes you are going to repair when you get around to it, get rid of it.
These questions apply to belts, purses, shoes, anything that lives in your closet.
Now you should have a much more manageable pile of stuff, in a pile, on the bed. While everything is out of the closet, clean it out. Vacuum, dust and wipe down all shelves and hardware before putting anything back.
Take a look at the stuff you have, could your closet work harder for you? What would it be great to have? Rods of different heights? More shelves? Draw a picture of what you think is the perfect closet for you, it doesn’t have to be perfect, no one will see it but you. Armed with your drawing and ideas, head to the store.
There are many easy to install closet systems that are not that expensive. You can purchase them at Home Depot or even Wal-Mart and need only basic skills to install them. If you are ready for this purchase, make sure you measure the inside of the closet, length width and height. Trust me, if you guess when you are at the store you will be wrong and have to make another trip. Not that I know this first hand or anything.
Once you get your lovely closet system home, remove the existing poles and shelves and install it, it’s really pretty easy. I like to have bins on the shelves to hold all the miscellaneous stuff, belts, hats, purses, etc. You can pick up plastic bins at the Dollar Store and organize to your heart’s content.
If you take the time to clean and organize your closet when you are changing from summer clothes to winter clothes and back again, your closet will be so much easier to maintain the rest of the year. Not to mention how easy it will be to find things!
