Climbing – Indoors and Out

My husband is a huge fan of indoor rock climbing. Indoor climbing is considered an offshoot of outdoor rock climbing. Originally designed to help outdoor climbing enthusiasts develop their skills and practice; the sport of indoor climbing has become popular in its own right.

There are a number of climbing gyms that have opened up all over the country. They feature climbing walls that have plastic holds and safety ropes that are strung from the upper portions of the walls in order to protect the climbers. As with other fitness gyms, climbing clubs often have exercise equipment and classes to help the climbers stay in shape.

Climbing walls are generally 30 to 40 feet in height and have different climbs for different skill levels. If you are interested in climbing, outdoor or indoor, the indoor climbing gym is a great way to get introduced to the sport and practice in relative safety.

At the indoor climbing gym my husband likes to go to – there is a very social atmosphere and he has met many other climbers. If you are interested, you should choose the climbing gym where they offer introductory classes in climbing, climb safety and the need for safety. Education is key to performing your climb in relative safety.

Some gyms even feature outdoor climbing programs that will guide you from the indoor training to actual outdoor experience. Climbing outdoors can be vastly different from climbing indoor – so avail yourself of the expertise available at your climbing gym of choice.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about how to get started at an indoor climbing gym!
