Common Sense Money-Savers

left

You don’t need to be a financial guru in order to save on a family vacation. Rather, all you need is a little common sense. By following these simple tips the next time you head out on a seasonal escape, you can spare your wallet a major dent:

Stay with Family or Friends: By staying with a loved one instead of at a hotel, you can save a ton of money. However, there are certain rules to consider so that you don’t burn your accommodation bridge, including not overstaying your welcome. It’s important to leave when you say you are going to leave. Don’t squeak out an extra few days if you promised you were only planning to spend one night. Another tip: Don’t arrive empty handed. Bring a thoughtful hostess gift or volunteer to make a meal or take everyone out for dinner before you leave. Also, tidy up after yourself. Make the house look better before leaving than when you first arrived. In addition, if the house rules include no smoking, no drinking, and no swearing, make sure you follow them. Finally, when you get home send a short thank-you note or gift to show your hostess how much you appreciated the accommodations.

Prep Your Vehicle: If you are hitting the highway on your way to your dream vacation destination, be sure to prepare your vehicle for the ride. By doing so you can save some serious cash. Start by removing any unneeded items from your vehicle–the heavier your car, the more fuel it will use. Also, keep your vehicle’s engine tuned and change the oil and air filters before departing on a long road trip. You should also keep your tires at the recommended level, as improperly inflated tires increase gas use. Another tip: Avoid using a roof rack. They can decrease fuel economy by 5%; instead, use the trunk to store your bags. In addition, use your car’s cruise control whenever possible, as driving at a consistent speed can save gas. Finally, avoid idling your car and keep the windows and sunroofs closed, as they can create drag and burn fuel.
