Cookie Cutter Fourth of July

Time to make fun food for Fourth of July. Your family and friends will be delighted with these holiday treats.

You will need some cookie cutters for these ideas. Stars are perfect, and you may already have star shaped cookie cutters from Christmas. If not, you should be able to pick them up for very little money.

Star Spangled Sandwiches

Start by trimming the crust from white bread. Spread each slice with your favorite filling, or try pimento spread, tuna or chicken salad, egg salad, or deviled ham, or add inexpensive meat or cheese. Top with another slice of bread, and press cookie cutter firmly into each sandwich.

Kids will have fun eating these sandwiches, so you might want to make some PB & Js or some bologna sandwiches too.

*If you have trouble getting the cookie cutter to go all the way through the sandwich, press it down firmly, and cut around the edges carefully with a sharp knife.

*To make sure sandwiches are properly chilled if serving outdoors, place the serving plate across the top of a bowl of ice or line sandwiches in a food storage container and place a larger, shallow one filled with ice beneath it.

Stars and Stripes Sugar Cookies

You can whip up your own favorite recipe for sugar cookie dough, pick up pre-made, or make the cookie dough recipe from Sculpt and Eat Crafts. Roll out the dough and cut stars with cookie cutters. Cut out some rectangles too. Bake according to package or recipe and allow to cool. Decorate with colored icing. A cute idea is to frost the rectangles with red and white stripes. Frost the center of the stars white and the outside edges blue.

Star Shaped Jell-O Jigglers

Use red and blue Jell-O flavors. Visit the Kraft website for Jell-O Jigglers directions. Note that no cold liquid is to be added when making Jigglers, as is normally done when making Jell-O. Cut Jell-O into stars.

*Keep properly chilled to avoid melting. Try one of the methods above for keeping sandwiches cool.
