Craft Time: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A favorite book among preschoolers is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. It has been a family favorite in my home. In fact, my little one has this book read to her almost every night. So it was thrilling for her to make her very own very hungry caterpillar from construction paper. Below are the directions for the craft.

Construction Paper Caterpillar

Materials:

green construction paper

red construction paper

yellow construction paper

brown construction paper

purple construction paper

glue stick

scissors

Directions:

Body: Cut out about six ovals out of the green construction paper. Glue onto the paper side by side to make the body of the caterpillar.
Head and Face: Cut out one oval about the same size of the body out of red construction paper. Glue at the front of the body on your paper. Cut out small green circles and yellow circles a bit larger than the green to make the eyes. Glue the yellow circles on first and then the green on top.

Antenna: Cut out two small strips of purple construction paper and then crinkle. Apply to the head of the caterpillar to resemble antenna.
Nose and Feet: Cut out a very small brown circle and glue on the caterpillar face as a nose. Then cut out several small brown feet, you can use an oval or small rectangle, and glue on your picture where the feet need to go.

In addition to this fun activity you can also make a butterfly. You can dothis with construction paper or with paint.

Directions:

Trace your child’s feet on construction paper. Cut out and flip so they appear to be wings.

Cut out a body simply by cutting a strip of construction paper longer than the wings.

Glue the each wing to the back of the body.

Poke a small hole in the head of the body and insert pipe cleaners.

You may want to add googly eyes and embellishments to the wings.
