You can make Valentine’s special without spending a lot of money on candy and trinkets. It really is the thought that counts, and you can make those thoughts shine and stand out this Valentine’s Day.
In this age of mobile media, texting, Facebook and email, a long lost art can be revived to make a really special gift. I am talking about the love letter. But wait. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of writing a love letter from scratch. Instead make the letter whimsical with the use of conversation hearts.
Conversation hearts are the little heart-shaped candies that come with Valentine sayings on them, such as Be Mine and Love Ya. You can purchase a little box of them for less than a dollar. Next, pick out a few of your favorite hearts and then use them to craft your love letter, substituting the conversation hearts in place of the words. Glue the hearts directly to the paper.
For example, you might write (or type) something such as “I am so glad that you are my (conversation heart) ‘True Love.’ Tonight (conversation heart) ‘Lets Kiss.’ You know that I am your #1 Fan.’”
This is a great Valentine’s idea for kids to do as well. You may have to help younger kids with the writing, but they will have fun picking out the various hearts and then gluing them in place. You can use it as a great Kindergarten or preschool craft, pointing out the letters and the words that are used.
By the way, conversation hearts have been in existence since the1860s, although the conversations have changed. New hearts say things such as “Text Me,” “Tweet Me,” “Be My Icon,” and “You Rock.”
Some of the hearts that have been discontinued include: “Dig Me,” “Hot Stuff,” and “You’re Gay” (meaning cheerful).
