D23 Screenings and Expo

Way back in January I looked at the D23 events planned for the first six months of the year. I promised that once the official Disney fan club posted details on what they had going on for the second half of the year, I’d share. Well, now June has rolled around and I’m trying to make good on my promise.

The thing is there really isn’t that much more going on for D23, at least not that’s been announced yet. June 18 sees an already-sold-out screening of the original “The Parent Trap.” That movie is part of the club’s “50 and Fabulous” series, which shows Disney movies turning 50-years-old. On June 23 there’s another D23 Day at the Walt Disney Studios and Archives, which is also already sold out.

The only brand new event for which tickets are still available is for Disney’s “Rocketeer” 20th Anniversary Celebration. On June 21, D23 is hosting a night at the El Capitan Theatre dedicated to the blockbuster film.

Before the film screening, popular director Kevin Smith will host a panel on the movie. Guests for the panel include “Rocketeer” star Bill Campbell, screenwriters Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, makeup artist Rick Baker, and The Rocketeer comics creator William Stout.

After the movie, guests can then adjourn to the Hollywood Museum. The museum contains four floors of film memorabilia, and for the night they’ll get to view costumes and props from “Rocketeer” released specially from the Walt Disney archives.

If you’re a D23 member and a fan of “Rocketeer” that sounds like a great night. However, there can’t be many people who belong to both groups, or the event would already be sold out like the other two.

But I know the big event all Disney fans are waiting for, D23 members or not, is the Expo. D23 still hasn’t released a schedule yet, which frankly surprises me. The convention is only about two months away, so we should at least know some of what will be going on.

Well, that’s not true; though not enough has been released yet to warrant a full schedule of events, the official Expo website does have a few details. It promises a look at some of Disney’s most anticipated 2011 releases (I’m assuming those that come after the Expo in August). Though it doesn’t specify what any of those movies are, the announcement comes with a still from the Muppet movie, so it’s safe to assume we’ll at least get to see more about that.

We’ve also got a list of the tables that will be on the show floor, thus they’ll be features going on the whole time of the convention. There’s the D23 Dream Store, filled with fan club-themed merchandise, and I’m sure there will be plenty of other stores to buy plain Disney items. The Parks and Resorts, Disney Channel, Radio Disney, and ABC will all have booths highlighting the best of their current and upcoming content.

The Walt Disney Archives team will also be present, bringing with them some of the gems of the studio’s collection. While that’s catnip enough on its own for fans of Disney minutiae, the Expo is also hosting its first-ever Ultimate Disney Trivia Tournament.

Stay tuned here for more information on the Expo once a full schedule of events is announced.
