Dad’s Losing It: At The Zoo

I thought that I was going to become a Daddy again yesterday, but at the last minute we backed out of a convenience-based near-decision to induce labor. Instead, since I was already scheduled to be home from work, we drove to a small but lovely local zoo and walked for about three hours. Instead of a costly and more than likely poor-quality lunch out, I did the sensible thing and packed peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for the three of us, a Ziploc bag of Pirate’s Booty to share, some fat free Fig Newtons (which really taste identical to the regular variety) and a tasty organic Can Do Kid chocolate crunch energy bar. It was a great day, maybe the last outing as a threesome. The weather was perfect for a day at the zoo, roughly 70 degrees and sunny with little-to-no humidity. Even the animals, with the exception of one sleepy cougar, were perky and responsive!

The long walk marked the first real exercise I had partaken in, aside from the shorter round-the-block walks as my girl rides her bike, in over a week. I had a landscaping company-owning next door neighbor mow my lawn over the weekend as I did not want to be indisposed for a couple loud hours should my wife go into labor, so I have been very sedentary. On the upside, I have begun my plan to cook more dinners from scratch, as I mentioned in my previous Dad’s Losing It article. I cooked on the grill Sunday and Monday, making burgers and hot dogs the first night and then Bangers and Mash (again, and again wonderful!). Last night, I prepared chicken quesadillas with peppers, onions and Spanish rice.

As I mentioned on Saturday, I am looking forward to being home with the new baby and spending time cooking full meals. Well, I am looking forward to the time away from the office for another reason as well – it seems as if everyone on my team of twelve was born in the Spring, meaning there are ice cream sundae bars, carrot cakes, cupcakes and ice cream cake (complete with the irresistible little chocolate crumblees) floating around my desk ALL THE TIME!

Until the weekend!
