Day 6: The Diary of an Overweight Mom—When The Scale Won’t Cooperate

Morning Weight 181.0 (UP 4 ounces from yesterday)

My scale disappointed me today—betrayed me even. Here I thought she was my friend, consistently showing lower numbers every morning, allowing me to feel that inner joy that only comes with knowing you’re on the right path. But today—today I woke to the sun filtering through my window. I yawned. I stretched. I made my way over my kids’ toys to the bathroom. I peeled off my nightgown (because, really, do you think I’d weigh myself with my clothes ON? No way) and I stepped on the scale. I looked down. I blinked once and then again. I rubbed my eyes. The numbers were UP from yesterday.

I resisted my usual fit of anger (or crying). After all, it was only four ounces. But four ounces might as well be four pounds when you’re blogging about your weight loss (and gain) publicly. But here I sit, admitting my sad fate to you today.

I can’t pretend anymore that it was the scale. The scale, evil as it may appear, is only a reflection of my choices. And my choices yesterday included ravioli for dinner and not one, but two pieces of shortbread at night. I knew this could happen. In truth, I even expected it. Still, seeing the small increase was a wake up call. Skip the dessert, Cathy.

So today I made better choices. Dinner is always a little hard, but if I know we’re having something a little less healthy, I can organize my day around it. That’s what I did today. Let’s hope the scale likes me tomorrow.

How did your day shape up? Here’s how mine went:

Breakfast: Banana

Lunch: Mediterranean couscous (I created this recipe today—you HAVE to try it. It’s low fat and has all the food groups in it, and you’ll never feel like you’re dieting if you eat this—see recipe below)

Snack: A large plum

Dinner: A hamburger-not fast food, homemade with lettuce, tomato, and mustard (no cheese, no mayo) and a little Turkish Potato Salad

Exercise? Nada but I’m aiming to get up early tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck!
