Dealing with Jealousy – part 1

Yesterday we looked at examples of jealousy in the Bible and the destructive situations jealousy can cause. We only have to look around us on any given day to see jealousy at work in our world, between siblings and family members, work colleagues, neighbors, film and TV stars, sportspeople, the list goes on. We might even struggle with jealousy in our lives.

Where does jealousy stem from? It often stems from our own insecurities and lack of self confidence or fear.

What is jealousy? According to Webster, the word jealous means “resentful and envious, as of someone’s success, achievements, advantages…”

Now that we have identified what jealousy is and where it comes from, what can we do about it. First, identify exactly why we are jealous of the other person. What is it that arouses jealousy in us? Is it the gifts or abilities they have? Is it because of their personal appearance or their job situation or because of their popularity? Is it because of what they own and the possessions they have?

Once the source of jealousy has been identified, it is easier – not easy, but easier, to find a way how to deal with it.

If it is because of gifts or abilities they have, then it might be helpful to draw up a list. But rather than focusing on their gifts and abilities, draw up a list of your own gifts and abilities. Sometimes we don’t see qualities and abilities in ourselves so you might need input from a close and trusted friend. One thing about friends is they usually recognize our good qualities and tend to gloss over our bad ones. You can always ask God to reveal to you your strengths and gifts.

Once you get started to you might be surprised at how many positives you have. Concentrate then on improving and making the best of those gifts and talents you have and not worrying about those you don’t have or those others have. You don’t have to compare yourself to others. You just have to be yourself and make the best use of the gifts and talents you have been given. It’s about accepting yourself for who you are and the way God has made you. God doesn’t make mistakes.
