Decorating on a Dime – Finding the Inspiration for Free

Decorating in a stylish way, yet on nothing more than a very small budget, is possible, but it takes a bit more work than just walking into a store and purchasing all the matching furniture pieces for thousands of dollars. Where do you find inspiration to design the room or rooms of your dreams?

New Homes

The first place I recommend looking is in new homes. On Sunday’s most new homes have open houses and you can walk through and gain color inspiration ideas, furniture inspiration ideas and decorating ideas. Most of these homes purchase cheap furniture and low cost decorations, yet they make it look appealing by hiring a really good interior designer. Walk through a few of these homes and get some ideas. Usually you can even bring a camera along and if all else fails, use your camera phone.

Magazines

Another terrific resource is Interior Design magazines and Decorating magazines. Magazines that are designed to give ideas and inspiration on decorating are the perfect place to glean a few design tidbits. Indeed, many will have expensive furniture and furnishings, however if you look beyond the expense, you can see how to use what you have, or it can help you keep an eye out for inexpensive items that will work perfectly when browsing garage sales, yard sales, antique stores and flea markets.

Home Improvement Stores

Take a walk down the aisles of your local home improvement store. There are dozens of design ideas. Most improvement stores have beautiful sample kitchens set up, and other areas in the store where designs are prevalent. In addition, you can look at mini paint sample cards, brochures and other items to get even more inspiration into colors, decorations and more.

Decorating does not have to break the bank or be impossible to achieve when you are living on a budget. Want more frugal decorating articles? Watch the frugal living blog for more great articles on decorating on a dime with unique ways to cut costs and save money.
