It used to be that upholstery nails were used for just that, upholstery. Remember the old heavy brass nails used for overstuffed leather furniture? Well, times have changed. Today upholstery nails come in all sorts of colors, sizes and designs. This fact makes it easy to use upholstery nails to decorate in Your home, Try one of the following projects.
Dress up a mirror with upholstery nails (You’ll need a mirror that has a wooden frame)
Dress up a picture frame with upholstery nails
Create a border of upholstery nails near your ceiling in place of crown molding
Create a mural on a wall using upholstery nails
Decorate a plain wooden box to look like treasure chest (for a child’s room) or an old shipping chest
Decorate a plain wooden chair with upholstery nails
When decorating with upholstery nails, make sure you have a flat surface to work with, since you will be nailing the upholstery nails. Sketch a design on your surface, such as the frame of your mirror, using a pencil. You can create a pattern, leaves, flowers, stars, even the outline of toys, letters or shapes. The design is up to your imagination. One hint for a project like this: you can photocopy a design you like, increasing or decreasing the size to fit. Then use your photo copy as a template for your surface.
Scout out your home improvement store or hardware store for an array of upholstery nails to suit your project. There is a wide selection of finishes available these days. If you don’t find anything you like, why not purchase the nails in white and then spray paint them? Make sure to allow the nails to dry before you use them in your project.
To begin, cover your nail with a scrap of cloth and use a pliers to hold the nail in place as you gently tap the nail in to place. Repeat with the rest of your nails until your project is complete. If color comes off of a nail and needed to be retouched after it is nailed, simply spray paint into a cup and then dip a small paint brush into the paint. Then dab the paint on to the nail.
