Decorating With Words

The expression, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” sums up the essence of scrapbook layouts. However, if you are a fan of journaling blocks, then you know that the right words can provide an added dimension to your favorite photos.

Journaling blocks allow you to share perspective on a particular event or series of pictures. Poems are another way you can decorate your layouts with profound thoughts and add deeper meaning to your images. However, when it comes to including poetry to your page designs, it is critical that the words fit the tone of the layout.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to selecting the perfect poem for a page design, though you can’t go wrong with short and sweet. While longer poems that stretch on for several stanzas may read like works of art, they may overwhelm a single page layout. If you feel compelled to include a longer poem in your memory book, consider choosing the parts that best fit the theme of the page.

In addition, think about how you can add the poem to the page in the most creative way possible. Calligraphy is one way you can feature a beautiful poem on a page; however, if you are not schooled in the fancy handwriting, then consider using printed fonts, rub-on letters or stamps.

You can also spice up the addition of poems on a scrapbook layout by creating different shapes with the words. For example, if you are planning to add a whimsical poem to a page design, rather than arranging the words in a straight line, consider turning the page as you write so the poem forms a whirl when you are done. Another option is to use cookie cutters or other stencils to design unique shapes in which to place the words of the poem in. For instance, if you are designing a Halloween-themed page, then trace a pumpkin shape and write a poem inside.
