What mother wouldn’t appreciate receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day? Yesterday my 3-year-old presented me with a heap of crunchy grass blades and declared the “bouquet” my Mother’s Day present. I did what any other self-effacing mother would have done: thanked her with a kiss on the cheek then placed the blades in a pretty pink bowl (where some of them continue to float this morning).
Let’s face it; flowers (and other greens) are the most popular gifts to give on Mother’s Day. Whether you pick a bunch of blooms from your own backyard (preferably not the ones your mom slaved three months over to get to blossom) or order a dozen from a local florist, you can bet mom will delight in a floral arrangement that reflects her unique personality and style.
So how can you make sure your bouquet selection will be
the perfect fit for your mom?
Here are some tips:
Traditional Moms: For moms and grandmothers who tend to be a bit more traditional you may want to stick with time honored bouquets made of pale pink roses, carnations or white lilies. You could add a splash of whimsy (just a touch) in the presentation by wrapping the vase in a sheer fabric or cloth and securing it with a pretty ribbon.
Modern Moms: If your mom is on the cutting edge of fashion and always seems to know what’s hip before everyone else does, you may want to go with a more contemporary style of bouquet. Think jazzy tropical flowers such as Birds of Paradise and dendrobium orchids. Or go modern with a bouquet of monochromatic tulips cut short and placed in a square vase.
Super Moms: She is a chef, therapist, secretary, social activities coordinator, chauffeur, nurse, and best friend rolled into one. If you are looking for the perfect bouquet for your “super mom” consider going LARGE with long-stemmed calla lilies, roses or sunflowers. For moms who do it all for you and others consider using her charitable ways as a theme–go eco-friendly with an organic arrangement or give her a bulb garden that will be admired long after Mother’s Day.
Artistic Moms: If your mom always has a camera, paintbrush, or hot glue gun close by, a great way to honor her unique artistic qualities is to add some personal touches to your gift. Try collecting old pieces of broken china and porcelain to create a unique mosaic vase or paint a terra cotta pot with a personal message or design, then add mom’s favorite flowers to it.
