Diabetes and Weight Loss

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. I know every month seems to have a mascot these days but it can be crucial to your health to know more about this illness. If you do not have diabetes you need to be aware of the factors that can contribute to you developing Type 2 diabetes. If you currently have Type 2 diabetes you will want to learn more about how to lower your blood sugar through diet and exercise and lessening your dependence on insulin.

In a National Institutes of Healthy study, participants who were over weight and had high yet not diabetic blood sugar levels, made changes to their diet and exercise routines. Over half in the study significantly reduced their chances of developing diabetes based on those changes alone. A person with diabetes can lower their blood sugar levels by losing 5 to 10 percent of their body fat if they are currently overweight. The link between diabetes and obesity is clear and strong. If you are obese you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If you have already developed this disease it is possible to eliminate your insulin and medications by losing weight. Losing 10 pounds will reduce blood sugar, lower blood pressure and relieve stress on your joints.

You must consult a doctor before going on any weight loss plans if you are a diabetic. Cutting calories can change your blood sugar. Changes in blood sugar need to be monitored to prevent any health risks. Slashing too many calories can cause blood sugar to go too low which could be very dangerous. The benefits of diet and exercise will be worth the time and effort you put into it. It will take careful planning but it is important to follow your doctor’s advice before going on a diet, especially if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
