Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Holiday Aftermath

I’m pleased to report that we survived the holiday rush at the cats only boarding facility!

When they said we were expecting a full house, they meant it. We had forty-five cats in the main part of the boarding facility and another twelve housed in the isolation wards in the veterinary clinic side. Plus an extra six cats tucked into various rooms around the building — the x-ray room, a spare exam room, and one vet’s office. Full indeed!

The schedule got pretty hectic. Taking care of sixty-three cats can use up quite a bit of time! And that’s sixty-three litter pans, sixty-three water bowls, and sixty-three supper dishes needing to be cleaned twice every day.

After Christmas, things calmed down a little bit. But for every cat who went home, it seemed like another came in for New Year’s! Empty condos barely sat for a few hours before they were refilled with a new guest. It was a two week whirlwind of activity.

Now that New Year’s has come and gone, things are starting to quiet down again. We currently have twenty-two guests in the boarding facility. What a difference! I actually had the time to sit down with a cat on my lap yesterday. That’s my favorite part of the job.

I’ve asked my coworkers if all holidays are like this. I can imagine lots of people going away for Memorial Day or Labor Day. To my surprise, the next big boarding holiday is the Fourth of July. Partly because of people going on vacation, but partly because of the fireworks. Some people send their cats to the boarding facility to give nervous kitties a safe haven away from the lights and noise.

In the meantime, I’ve got a few months of cat cuddling and quiet, leisurely mornings to look forward to at the boarding facility.
