Diary of an Overweight Mom: Finally—SICK of Macaroni and Cheese

I’ve always loved macaroni and cheese. In fact, we go way back—as far as I can remember. Nothing short of a banana cream pie has tasted so good on my lips as a forkful of creamy macaroni and cheese. But now, well, let’s just say the honeymoon has ended.

After being sick for a week and dining solely on fast food or some form of pasta, I’m officially sick of carbohydrates. I feel bulked out, full, and a bit like a linebacker. Thankfully, I didn’t gain weight during my carb-fest, but sometimes weight isn’t the only indication that you need to lay off the bread.

When I’m feeling bloated—when my pants are tight—when my face feels like a balloon, I know I need to do two things: drink a lot more water and eat a lot less bread and pasta.

So today I’m finishing what’s in the fridge, (because let’s be honest, I’ve got a family to feed and not an unlimited grocery store account) including a large container or Mediterranean couscous I made the other day, and then that’s it. I’m going to start making dinner again. I’m going to eat salad. I’m going to eat vegetables and lean meat. Heck, I may even dive into some fish willingly…maybe.

Getting sick stinks. Getting over being sick can take weeks, especially when you live with other people and unknowingly pass germs back and forth faster than a hot potato. And admittedly, food choices aren’t always the best during these times. You do what you can. You make allowances when you can. But sometimes you just don’t have the energy to care. It is these times when I give myself permission to feast on cream cheese and grape jelly toast. But it is also these times when I must make a conscious effort to get back on track when I am well.

And alas, though I’m admittedly not feeling 100 percent yet (I’d say I’m teetering about 75% or so) I am feeling good enough to finally get out of my smelly pj’s and make some wise choices.

Here’s to no more macaroni and cheese—for a while anyway. Old habits die hard.
