Did You Choose Godparents for Your Baby?

godparent The concept of having godparents comes out of more liturgical traditions such as Catholicism. Different denominations have different “qualifications” for being a godparent. For example, in some churches it is suggested that the godparent be a member of the same church. However, I rather like the concept of having godparents–regardless of whether or not you’re religious and so bear with me for a minute here.

Godparents are supposed to take the time necessary to build a special relationship with your child. They are supposed to share with them values and morals and take a vested interest in their lives. Obviously, choosing a godparent would mean choosing someone who shares similar morals and values and you and your spouse. But I rather like the idea of choosing a mentor of sorts for your baby before he even needs mentoring.

It Takes a Village

I have always found this to be true. We live in a society that likes to say that we don’t need anyone’s help parenting, and that we know best. You don’t tell me what to do with my baby and I won’t tell you what to do with yours. While I certainly advocate trusting your instincts, having someone who will take a vested interest in your child with you is an incredible asset in the parenting journey. Picking someone who will do that with you is a trick–but well worth the effort.

What If You’re Not Religious

I know some of you reading this may be thinking that’s fine and dandy but you’re not religious. Never underestimate the power of loving adults in your child’s life. I would suggest to you that rather than choosing godparents, you choose “mentors”. Or just sit down and have a conversation about the role you’d like that person to play in your child’s life.
