We are just hours away from the start of the Labor Day holiday weekend–the official end of the summer season. For many families the weekend marks the last chance to escape city life before the new school year begins. If you are one of the millions heading off on a camping adventure today or tomorrow you might find the following recipes helpful.
If you have never cooked a dish in a paper bag now is a good time to start. Unique cooking techniques are often employed out of necessity when you’re roughing it. Start your day in the great outdoors with these simple yet tasty dishes and have a wonderful holiday weekend.
BREAKFAST IN A BAG
Ingredients:
Bacon or Sausage
Eggs
Small Paper Bag
Directions:
Layer 3 strips of bacon, or about 1/2 pound of ground sausage in the bottom of a small paper bag.
Crack 2 eggs on top of the meat and season with salt and pepper if desired.
Fold top of bag closed, and skewer onto a stick at top of bag. Hold bag over hot coals till cooked. (Be careful not to let the hot coals touch the bag.)
Cooking time depends on temperature of coals, usually about 20 minutes.
OMELET IN A BAG
Ingredients:
Large Ziploc Bags
Large pot of boiling water
Eggs
Ham, Bacon or Sausage
Cheese
Onions
Peppers
Chopped tomatoes
Mushrooms
Salt and Pepper
Directions:
Crack 2 or 3 eggs into a large Ziploc bag. Add your favorite omelet ingredients, seal bag and massage contents to mix thoroughly.
When well mixed, place sealed baggie in a large pot of boiling water, and cook until firm.
Open bag and enjoy your omelet.
EGGS IN A PAPER CUP
Ingredients:
Eggs
Paper Cups
Directions:
Place whole egg in a paper cup and fill with water.
Create a hole in your hot coals for the cup to sit, and place cup in hole.
The water will boil and the cup will not burn below the water level.
Let boil for approximately 10 minutes.
