Disposing of Computer Monitors

Did you know that computer monitors, or more accurately some of the elements inside them, are considered “hazmat” or hazardous materials? Due to this fact, computer monitors should not be thrown away or taken to a landfill.

There are specific processes that must be followed for recycling computer monitors to protect public safety. So, if you have an old monitor that’s taking up space and you would like to get rid of it, how do you find an appropriate disposal option?

Sell It

If your monitor works fine, but you decided to replace it with a bigger or better one, you might be able to sell it. People who piece together computer systems or repair used appliances might be interested. Just don’t expect too get much for it.

Donate It

Another option for a monitor that still works is donating it to a school, church, park district, or a charity. Charities are not likely to accept it, unless you prove that the unit is in good working order.

State or City Programs

If your monitor does not work, check the phonebook or look online to see if your state has an “e-waste” program. If so, through that program you should be able to find a local resource, or hopefully one that is not too far from your home.

Some areas also provide an annual or semi-annual clean up days on which they will pick up more than regular rubbish. See if your area allows for disposing of computer monitors during citywide clean up days.

Private Companies

If you are considering using a private company for monitor disposal, be sure to ask questions before making the trip. Many such companies only work with other businesses and collect monitors in quantity but will not take an individual monitor.

Other private companies, some of which you can find online, will dispose of or recycle your computer monitor for a fee, and if you also pay for shipping. Monitors are heavy, so it probably won’t be cheap, but it is another option if nothing else pans out.

*Please note that TVs should also be disposed of properly.
