Do Men with Sisters Make Better Husbands?

Wayne and I got to talking over the holidays about men and women and sometimes how hard it is for the one to read the other. He feels it’s easier for women to decipher men, but men are generally clueless about what makes women tick. And what ticks them off. And how to approach them when you’re in that dating phase.

I was surprised to hear that from him.

“You were nervous about talking to girls?”

“Heck yeah! I didn’t know what to say to them. They were a complete mystery to me. You never knew what to expect or what they were going to do. They might talk back or they might turn up their nose and walk away.”

I was shocked. Wayne’s a pretty outgoing, easy going guy. To my knowledge he’s never had trouble talking to anyone.

But as we talked more he admitted that he wasn’t always as seemingly confident as he’s grown to be. In those awkward teenage years, the prospect of approaching a girl was as scary as having to give a presentation in front of the class. Maybe even worse.

But then he said something I found extremely curious.

“I always envied my guy friends who had sisters, though. They never seemed to get so bugged out about talking to girls. Especially if they had an older sister. They seemed to understand some of the mysteries surrounding them. Like why they could be moody and stuff. They’d lived with them and were used to the unpredictable ways they could behave. They seemed to be more sensitive about it all.”

Could that be true? Could having a sister help a man understand a woman’s nature better? Could it prepare him later for being a better husband?

I don’t know. But he raised an interesting point.

He grew up in a family of boys. Except for his grandma and a couple of aunts and cousins, it was definitely a “Boys Rule” environment. He could have benefited from a little bit more feminine influence, especially in our early dating years. He might have been a little more sympathetic during certain issues.
