Do You Really Need to Deep Clean?

Not your pores; your house.

It seems everywhere I go these days someone or something is reminding me to deep clean my house in time for spring. For some reason, the season of new beginnings heralds the arrival of gratings reminders that it is time to get on my knees and scrub the dirty bathroom floors that I have neglected since Thanksgiving.

Spring cleaning—BAH! HUMBUG!

Sadly, there are quite a number of cleaning projects on my list. However, housekeeping is not only about removing dirt and grime from countertops and toilet seats. There are many other aspects to keeping a house looking and feeling spring-like.

If you are looking for simple ways to brighten your home in time for Easter, consider the following:

Replace artificial flowers that have decorated your home since fall with fresh flowers. Greenhouses typically offer savings on early-spring arrivals. If you live in a warm climate, then cut some blossoms from your yard and arrange them in vases throughout your house.

Change your throw pillows and rugs (or purchase inexpensive covers) to reflect the change of seasons. Replace dark colors with pastels or neutral tones.

Switch out your window treatments. Replace heavy window hangings with lighter ones to allow more sun to shine in. You could also change your window valences to lighter colors or ones with a nice floral pattern. Then, open the windows and let the fresh air in.

Store heavy throws and fleece blankets. Also, if your bed is covered with a thick quilt or comforter, consider replacing it with a lighter blanket or bedspread.

Just remember to properly store your seasonal items, so they will be in good shape when you take them out next winter. It’s also a good idea to organize your storage containers so you know where they are and what they contain. I tape a list of the items in each container, so I don’t have to open and close them during a search for a specific item. Don’t think that using clear plastic containers will solve your problems. If the item you are looking for is small and hidden, you will need to open the container to look in areas that cannot be seen from the outside. Spare yourself time and energy by simply taping a content list on the side of the storage container.
